I was still 17 and trying to figure my life in the United States when I realized my love for fashion was too tremendous to just be contained within Instagram panels. Gloomy and gray, just like any other day in Seattle, I opened my my mailbox to check if any other rejections from the colleges I had applied to had arrived when I came across another fashion show invite from a major department store in my mailbox, whose past invites I had thrown to the garbage without a second look simply because they are not Proenza or Oscar de la Renta. This time round I knew that being in Seattle did not leave me with that much choice. I had to attend the runway show to see if attending shows were something that I enjoyed.
The night prior was the 2014 MET Gala. It is still vivid in my mind that the theme was “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” and everyone walked the carpet with an ode to the old Hollywood fashion – silver screen and the 40s’ teased hair. There came Kim Kardashian who had been clamoring about her very first personalized invite to the MET, and boy oh boy, I fell in love with her dress which I discovered was Lanvin and I immediately looked up who the creative designer behind the brand was, and that was how I came to know Alber Elbaz. I started obsessing with his creations and looking up celebs like Emma Stone wearing his design. I sank deeper into the fashion world and knew I had to channel my passion. It was at that moment that I was finally able to pinpoint a designer whom I could confidently put on my list as the only designer I wanted to design my look for my wedding. Sadly, Alber passed on a few days ago and alas I have not found the right person to marry when he was still alive. Believe it or not I still am not prepared for his replacement. Who do you guys think I should put on my list next? Virginie Viard of Chanel? Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen? I am obsessed with her knuckle clutches though, the ones that always embrace different unique arts every season. Let me know your suggestions, but I am still mourning Alber’s passing and all the chance I have blown to get married while he was still around. Below are some of the looks from Alber that I love the most.
